Russell Bentley

Artist Statement

When creating a new painting I always like to view my canvas as if I were looking out an open door or window and seeing something happen that in real life would only be accessible from a great distance. I hope that when you look at a finished work, you feel as though you could walk right into the picture. I strive for detail and realism although some of my paintings have a touch of surrealism included which gives the finished art a slight "Disney" quality such as "Out on a Limb" and "Sneaking out". But it's always interesting to hear how others view my work so please sign my guest list and let me know how they look through your eyes.

Thanks, Russell Bentley

Biography

A self-taught artist, Russell began his art career in the small town of Redan Georgia, located about twenty-five miles east of Atlanta. It was here that he gathered many ideas now incorporated into his paintings. As a young boy, Russell enjoyed sketching many different subjects including old barns, houses, churches, animals and landscapes. In those years, most of his work was in pencil or charcoal. Wanting to add color to his subjects, in 1974 he began to use pastels as his medium and began focusing more on his favorite subject, wildlife.

In the early part of 1976, he was invited to Frame House Gallery in Louisville Kentucky where he met and studied the techniques of artists such as, Charles Frace, Ray Harm and Jim Harrison. Over the past fifteen years, Russell has found acrylics to be his favorite medium because of the detail it allows and the textures that are achieved. His wildlife paintings have won top honors in various juried shows and many of his originals can be found in private and corporate collections. Now residing in Stockbridge Georgia with his wife Diane, Russell hopes to continue producing original wildlife paintings and limited edition prints for everyone to collect and enjoy.
